Tokyo Beach Sand

July 14th, 2008

Sand is everywhere.  Under everything we stand on there is sand.  Sand is found in the layers of earth below us and on the beaches of lakes and oceans.  Sand is found as commonly throughout the earth as salt.

Anyone can find sand anywhere they are on the earth.  Whether they are on the beaches of the Caribbean or just at their local pond, there is sand on the bed of every body of water.

Sand is essentially millions of small pieces of rock. Most of the sand we see on beaches is from larger rocks that have been broken apart and eroded to the small crystals that we refer to as sand.

The rocks may have started large, but after years of erosion from water movement and breaking down from the motion in the ocean, they become small particles that line our ocean and lake floors.

Most sand that’s found underground lies around the water tables for the same reason.  The larger rocks are eventually eroded and the water tables are packed with sand.  The sand along the water tables also allows the water to move freely and works as a nice conductor for water flow.

Sand is mostly known as being the unsung hero of tropical vacations.  Laying out in the soft sand is one of life’s great experiences, yet most don’t take the time to sit and really appreciate the sand for what it’s worth.  Kids and adults spend hours erecting huge sand castles or digging cool holes in the sand to bury themselves up to their necks.

Sand is everywhere we go, there are small gatherings of sand along curbs of streets, even in the big cities and there are miles of desert that is nothing but sand.  These little granules make the earth what it is and are a part of everyday life.
